Field Notes

The Grizzly Bear Habitat Restoration initiative focuses on determining the grizzly bear presence and habitat within the Kitselas Traditional Territory. This multi-phase project combines qualitative research with field-based data collection, including over 50 strategically placed game cameras. The end goal is to restore critical habitats impacted by industrial activities, such as forestry, through reforestation and habitat enhancement efforts.

Location

Kitselas Traditional Territory, Northwest BC

Kitselas First Nation is a progressive Indigenous community in northwestern B.C., with traditional territory surrounding Terrace and the Skeena River.

Local Job Creation

All staff involved in this project, except for the lead, are Kitselas members, creating employment opportunities and enhancing local skills.

Knowledge Sharing and Integration

Combined local Indigenous ecological knowledge with field-based data collection, ensuring a holistic and collaborative approach to identifying and restoring critical habitats.

Unique Wildlife Discoveries

The project uncovered rare wildlife activity, including mountain goats in lowlands, cougars, and hybrid grizzly-black bears, enriching the ecological knowledge of the territory.
